Kakadu National Park

Enjoy a 1km circular walk around Ubirr, exploring the iconic rock art sites which feature important food animals. Find stories of behaviour and law told at the Mabuyu, Narmarrkan Sisters and Rainbow Serpent paintings.

Once you have taken in the cultural significance and history on your walk, venture the 250m climb up the escarpment to enjoy vast views of the flood plains, woodlands and rainforest.

Best enjoyed at sunset as the calls of the Kookaburra’s let everyone know they are home for the evening!

At Yurmikmik walks, there are a number of circuits to self-explore in this region of the Top End! Opting for a shorter route, you can enjoy a 2km stroll around Boulder Creek! Where fruit doves and spangled drongos call home.

Or if you’re up for a bit more of a challenge, the look out walk is a 5km trek where you can take in the view over the South Alligator catchment and the southern hills and ridges!

The Motor Car falls track in a pleasant 7.5km return loop which takes you through the southern hills and ridges. Keep an eye out for wallabies, red-tailed black cockatoos, azure kingfishers and many more amazing birdlife!

As you traverse through the monsoonal rainforest you will reach a beautiful natural pool, Motor Car Falls, to enjoy a plunge into!

Katherine National Park

If you are wanting to explore a hidden gem in Nitmuluk National Park, the 9kn return trek to the Southern Rockhole is sure a treat. This self-walk takes you along the Katherine Gorge, up and down the escarpment and through monsoonal rainforest.

As you reach the rockhole, you will be immersed in a beautiful natural blue pool! Crystal clear and prefect to plunge into to refresh and enjoy a self-packed lunch by!

Hiker’s far and wide come to the Territory for this well-known trek, The Jatbula Trail! This is not for the faint-hearted as it is a 5 day trek with 60km of Nitmuluk National Park to cover.

On the journey you are travelling along an ancient Song Line used by the Jawoyn people. This trail takes you through changing escarpment with monsoon forest, rocky outcrops and ancient rock art to admire along the way.

Throughout the trip you will camp alongside fabulous waterfalls and waterholes, as each afternoon brings about a different pool or spa to sit back and relax in!

The best fishing spots in Darwin

Tropical waters, plenty of coastline and a lot of fish

The Top End has some of the best fishing in the world, but you have to know where to go. Get local tips on where to throw your line in when you visit Darwin.

Kakadu - South & East Alligator River

While Kakadu is a little further out of Darwin, it’s well worth the 3-4 hour drive. Discover the floodplains of the South Alligator and the sandstone gorge country of the East Alligator, with secluded billabongs in between.

The South Alligator is one of the Top End’s most active barramundi rivers, particularly in the tropical summer (November to April) and run-off (March and April). During the cooler months, expect to find Black Jewfish and Golden Snapper around the mouth of the river.

Darwin Harbour

If you're keen on bluewater fishing, Darwin Harbour is a great, easy to access choice. Eight times bigger than Sydney Harbour, Darwin Harbour is dotted with shipwrecks, mangroves and is an anglers paradise.

Catch Spanish Mackeral and Longtail Tuna in the dry season and troll baits for Marlin and Sailfish toward the end of the year. You can also bottom bounce for reef fish like Black Jewfish and Snapper right throughout the year.

Most Darwin Harbour charters leave from Cullen Bay, but there are also a number of boat hire companies and tackle shops if you want to do it all yourself.

Mary River National Park

Grab your rod and explore the lower reaches of Mary River at the famous Shady Camp. Just 2 hours from Darwin, Shady Camp is a popular spot for beginners and experts alike.

Corroboree Billabong is another great spot to throw your line in. Aside from consistently good fishing, the surrounding tropical wetlands are one of the most scenic in the Top End.

The best time to fish at Mary River is during run-off season between March and April each year. This is when the floodplains begin to drain and the rivers are teeming with Barramundi.

Fun fact: Most NT rivers have an average of 5 crocodiles per kilometre, but in the Mary River that number jumps up to nearly 15!

Bynoe Harbour

Around 1.5 hours by boat south-west of Darwin, Bynoe Harbour is a great dry season hot spot for fish.

As the harbour is relatively shallow and lined with mangrove forest, it offers a great habitat for species including Barramundi, Mangrove Jack, Threadfin Salmon and Mud Crab. There are also deep holes that fish well for Black Jewfish.

You can jump on a day charter to Bynoe Harbour from Darwin. Expect to see some incredible scenery and wildlife along the way.

The Story of Hudson Fysh

An aviation pioneer

The Hudson Apartments are positioned in the centre of the historical aviation precinct of Parap and Fannie Bay. Directly behind is the historical QANTAS hanger which has been converted to a museum. This precinct has hosted such iconic names as Ross Smith and Amy Johnson. Both have had Darwin Avenues named after them.

An iconic name, well known to locals is Hudson Fysh, also having an Avenue named after him.

Hudson Fysh, DFC, KGB, was voted one of the 100 most influential Australians of the 20th Century.

Amongst his many achievements, arguably his greatest was the pioneering of air travel, air mail delivery and medical assistance to remote locations in Queensland.

He fought in the light horse brigade during WW1, and later became a decorated gunner in the Australian Air Flying Corps. Just as WW1 was ending, while in Egypt, he trained as a pilot.

On his return to Australia, he was appointed surveyor for landing sites in Australia for the Great Air Race from England to Darwin won by Ross Smith.

After leaving Darwin, Hudson Fysh made his way to Longreach in Queensland. In the company of his pilot during WWI, Captain McGinness, they envisaged the need for a passenger and airmail delivery service, due to the remoteness of outback Queensland. They discussed the idea, obtaining finance from those enlightened by their vision, including their own savings, and major finance from Fergus McMaster. On the 16th November 1920 the Queensland and Northern Territory Air Service was born, with the acronym QANTAS. Hudson carried the first paying air passenger in Australia. He was also the founding father of Tourism Australia.

He went on to become the CEO and Managing Director of QANTAS, after the Australian Government bought QANTAS. He retired in 1966 and was knighted for his services to Australian and international air travel.

In 2002, Fysh was inducted into the Pacific Air Travel Association’s Gallery of Legends for ’’personal excellence, integrity and a lifetime contribution to travel and tourism’’.

A Territory Tradition

The iconic Million Dollar Fish competition kicks off in October for its ninth season! The competition will give fishos the chance to win in a huge pool of prize money between 1st October 2023 and 31st March 2024 .

Home to the famous Barramundi, the Top End is widely recognised as one of the best destinations to hook these tropical fish.

The competition started back in 2015 and attracts people from right across Australia and the rest of the world.

Drop a line for your chance to win

There are now 11 red-tagged fish worth $1 million in Top End waterways!

In addition to the Million Dollar Fish, there are also barra swimming worth $10,000 each if caught. Anglers who catch a $10,000 fish have the opportunity to also donate an additional $1,000 to one of the Million Dollar Fish Official Charity Partners.

Barra are tagged and released in 5 main Top End regions - Darwin, Arnhem Land, Kakadu, Katherine and the Tiwi Islands.

Since the competition's debut, over 50 anglers from all over Australia have snagged winning Barra. You can check out the previous winners by visiting Million Dollar Fish .

What to do if you catch a tagged barra

First and foremost, hold onto that Barra tight and don’t let him jump back into the water!

Here’s what you should do if you catch a tagged barra:

Don’t remove the tag from the fish
Photograph and fish with the tag - if there is algae on the tag, clean it off before taking a photo. You’ll need to take 3 photos all up.
Call 1800 077 001 and quote the unique code on the tag before getting further instructions on how to claim
Verify tag in person - your tag will need to be validated by a RFID reader in person

Start planning

Make sure you register online before you start fishing. If you’re not registered and catch a winning barra, you won’t be eligible to claim your prize money.

Where to see a Croc in Darwin

The Top End has one of the biggest populations of crocodiles in the world. Both Saltwater and Freshwater Crocodiles inhabit our waterways, with Salties being the bigger and more powerful of the two species.

The average size of a male Saltwater Croc is a huge 5 metres and they can weigh over 500kg - an absolute force of nature.

Getting to know our crocs is a must-do if you really want to immerse yourself in the Territory. If you’re visiting Darwin, there are lots of nearby places to get up close and personal with these prehistoric creatures.

Crocosaurus Cove

In the heart of the Darwin CBD you’ll find some of Australia’s largest Saltwater Crocodiles. Crocosaurus Cove on Mitchell Street has a bunch of unique croc experiences for the whole family.

Cage of Death - Fancy swimming with crocs? The infamous Cage of Death at Croc Cove is not for the faint hearted. You’ll be plunged into a pool with one of Australia’s biggest apex predators for an adrenaline-pumping experience you won’t get anywhere else.

Big Croc Feed Show - Starting with a ‘Bite Force’ demonstration, learn about Salties feeding habits and how they’ve survived for over 200 million years in the wild. Show times are at 11.30am and 2.30pm.

Fishing with Crocs - This fun family-friendly activity gives you the chance to feed young Freshwater Crocs from your fishing line! Watch how they catch their prey and get an insight into their behaviour in the wild.

Jumping Crocodile Cruise

This famous crocodile tour takes you up one of the most croc-filled scretches of Adelaide River. This easy day trip is just an hour drive from Darwin along the Arnhem Highway.

The 1 hour cruise gives you the chance to see powerful Salties in their natural habitat. Watch the feeding demonstration as the guides entice crocs out of the water so you can get an up close view of these impressive creatures. Learn about croc biology, their behaviour and the diverse floodplain ecosystem they inhabit.

Museum and Art Gallery

Just down the road from Hudson Parap you’ll find the Top End’s most famous reptile - a 20 foot croc named Sweetheart. While Sweetheart might be taxidermied, his story is a legendary part of Northern Territory history.

In the 1970s, Sweetheart got a name for himself for his tendency to stalk fishermen at a popular Darwin fishing spot. By 1979, Sweetheart ramped up his attacks and it became a major safety concern. Rangers captured Sweetheart, but he tragically died as they tried to relocate him.

Infamous Sweetheart now rests at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory and has been visited by millions. You can get free entry into the museum to check him out as well as explore the other displays of unique Territory wildlife.

Territory Wildlife Park

Located a 40-minute drive from Darwin's CBD, this is a hidden gem! Featuring a number of wildlife roaming in their natural habitat is a special sight to see. Catch the bus or wander around this park as you explore the different and everchanging environments!

Don't miss out on featured interactions and shows at the flight deck and feed times. You can even experience an up-close encounter with some amazing creatures!

Choose your adventure: Litchfield, Nitmiluk and Kakadu

Darwin is your gateway to the Top End’s spectacular natural wonders. People right around the country are drawn to the Territory for it’s wild landscapes and fair share of waterholes.

Litchfield, Kakadu and Nitmiluk are the Top End’s most popular national parks. As a visitor to the NT, it can be hard to know what to expect at each. We’ve given you a run down of the 3 parks so you can choose your Top End adventure.

Litchfield

Just 1.5 hours south of Darwin, Litchfield is the place to go if you want an easy day trip. The park does have a range of camping options, but if you’re short on time it’s an easy way to get amongst Top End nature on your visit.

Florence Falls and Buley Rockhole are the most popular spots, but if you want to escape the crowds we’d recommend exploring Cascade Falls. It’s a lengthier walk to the falls (2.6km return for Lower Cascades and 3.3km return for Upper Cascades) but one of the best ways to see Litchfield. And of course, you’ll be rewarded with a swim in the pristine rock pools!

For those with a 4WD, Tjaynera Falls (Sandy Creek) and Surprise Creek Falls are local recommendations. You’ll also get to experience some awesome river crossings on your way there.

Nitmiluk

Nitmiluk National Park is renowned for its 13 spectacular gorges which wind their way through the sandstone country.

There’s a bunch of different ways you can explore Nitmiluk. Jump in a canoe and take your time to paddle up the gorge, enjoy a cruise (we recommend the dawn and sunset tours) or even check it out from above in a helicopter.

For the adventure seekers, Nitmiluk has some world class mountain biking trails that carve along the top of the gorges. Or, you can opt to do the Jatbula Trail, a 5-6 day hike that traverses the park and neighbouring Arnhem Land escarpment.

Nitmiluk is only 30km out of Katherine, so you can also explore the township while you’re there. On your way back to Darwin, stop at Edith Falls and cool off in the upper pools.

Kakadu

If you want to escape the world for a few days, exploring Australia’s biggest national park might be the best way to do it. Kakadu National Park stretches over 20,000 km2 and is home to some of the most preserved and biodiverse ecosystems in the world.

People are most commonly drawn to Kakadu for its spectacular towering waterfalls, escarpments and rich Aboriginal culture and history.

Jim Jim Falls is one of the most iconic falls in Kakadu. With cliffs over 200m high, you can hike into the heart of the thundering waterfall throughout the dry season. To truly see the colossal size of Jim Jim, take a scenic flight over Jim Jim and neighbouring Twin Falls.

Maguk (Barramundi Gorge) is another must-do spot in Kakadu. Follow the sandy creek bed through monsoonal forest to reach the crystal clear plunge pool. You can also hike up to the top of the falls where you’ll find more cascading pools and incredible views over the gorge.

While you’re in Kakadu, make sure you check out the Nawurlandja lookout walk and Ubirr Rock for incredible views.

Mindil Beach Sunset Markets

Enjoy the tropical night air at Darwin's Mindil Beach Sunset Markets every Thursday and Sunday evening between April and October. The markets have an array of stalls offering international cuisine, arts, crafts and entertainment. Their unique combination of great food and an electric atmosphere make a visit a must do.

Rapid Creek Market

Be a part of Northern Territory tradition and visit Darwin’s oldest market, the Rapid Creek Markets! Located in the heart of the northern suburbs, about 10km from Darwin CBD. Transforming the Rapid Creek Business Village into a bustling slice of Asia, the market delivers a vibrant experience of bright colours, rich aromas and exciting sounds. With more than 100 market stalls and stores, there’s plenty for you to see, do and discover!

Parap Market & Shopping Village

The Parap Markets, located close to the city in Parap, will tantalise your senses with a mixture of Asian cuisine and the aroma of freshly ground coffee. The Parap Village Market is a great place to shop and is a favourite among locals and visitors alike. Browse the markets, winding through stalls of local produce, local arts and crafts, entertainment and delicious cuisine from around the world.

Malak Marketplace

At Malak Marketplace, you will enjoy shopping, live music, kids’ entertainment and beautiful, market-fresh food throughout the evening. This wonderful community market celebrates all the tastes of tropical life in Darwin; the food, the sounds, the flavours and the diverse cultures that bring communities to life.

Tea Time at Audit House

The Audit House was built for the Commonwealth Auditor in 1938. The residence is one of a number built in this part of Darwin for high-ranking public servants in the 1930s.

It is now a rare example of a large-scale housing form used in Darwin during 1920-1940.

Audit House is a particularly fine example of tropical housing, the house is carefully designed for climate and is located within a large and well-established garden.

Darwin Sailing Club

The Darwin Sailing Club is an active and vibrant family orientated club offering year round sailing and hospitality to members and visitors to Darwin from the beautiful clubhouse on Fannie Bay. The open and airy clubhouse on Fannie Bay offers the perfect setting to enjoy the spectacular Darwin sunsets with family and friends.

Trailer Boat Club

The Darwin Trailer Boat Club is Darwin’s oldest seaside Club. From its humble origins in 1958, trading from a modified caravan, the Club has grown to become a Darwin institution. Over the past sixty years the Club has forged strong links with the boating and fishing community.

The Club’s westerly aspect is ideal for witnessing Darwin’s famed tropical sunsets. Take a seat under the palms, order a cold ale and enjoy a truly amazing spectacle as the sun sinks into the horizon. Meanwhile the kids can swim in the pool, play in the shaded playground area or watch a video on the big screen. Families won’t be disappointed as they’ll find one of the best located kid friendly venues in the Top End.

Parap Fine Foods

Parap Fine Foods is an iconic Darwin institution. Established by the Pantazis family over 50 years ago, the store has grown into much more than a corner store - it's a destination for some of Darwin's best local gourmet food and fine wine.

Even better, it's right across the road from the Hudson. We'd recommend getting yourself a picnic from Parap Fine Food's famous deli and heading on down to East Point to enjoy the feast and watch the sunset.

Laneway

Darwin's coffee culture has taken off over the last few years, and Laneway has proven that the Top End is well deserving of being a part of Australia's trendy and ever-growing café scene.

In the heart of Parap on a prime corner location and adorned with tropical plants, Laneway serves speciality coffee and fresh, modern all-day dining options. You'll also find a bunch of tasty options for kids on the menu.

Darwin Cup Carnival

The annual Darwin Cup Carnival is packed with spectacular racing events in the heart of tropical Fannie Bay. It’s the event of the dry season!

Each year there are days of action packed racing and events to choose from, as you soak up the vibrant atmosphere in the Top End's beautiful dry.

Here’s what to keep an eye out for this Cup Carnival:

The Paddock

The Paddock is the newest addition to the Great Northern Darwin Cup. Get classy garden party vibes with DJ entertainment, shaded seating and an antipasto and cheese box upon arrival, as well as food trucks exclusive to the Paddock.

Silk’s Rooftop Bar

One of Darwin’s newest establishments, Silks, has a prime trackside location at the Turf Club and is offering some great package deals for the cup day.

And what better place to watch the racing action than Silk’s Rooftop Bar, complete with canapés and a premium drinks package.

Gala Ball

Wine, dine and be entertained at this year's Darwin Turf Club Gala Ball. Beach side at Little Mindil, indulge in a night under the stars with quality entertainment including Robbie Williams and Billy Joel tributes.

Tickets include a buffet dinner, premium drinks package and of course, the chance to dress up and enjoy the spectacular dry season.

Fashion on the Field

While we love the horse racing, the spectacular carnival fashion is always a stand out each race season. Darwin, and particularly the Darwin Cup, is known for it lively colours and patterns which connect fittingly to our tropical home.

The time and location for Fashions on the Field is yet to be released so keep an eye on the Darwin Turf Club website for updates.

Airboat Tours

Feel the rush of an airboat on a Top End airboat tour! Airboats a great way to explore areas of shallow tidal flats and estuaries because they are designed to float on top of the water, unlike traditional boats. Zip around the harbour, tidal flats and river inlets and get the unique airboat experience. Don’t forget to put your ear muffs on!

Crocosaurus Cove

Unsuspectingly located in the heart of the Darwin CBD, Croc Cove is home to some of the largest Saltwater Crocodiles in Australia. It's a must do when you're visiting Darwin.

Want something cool to tell your friends about back home? The infamous Cage of Death at Croc Cove is not for the faint hearted. Available to anyone 15 years and over, you’ll be plunged into a pool with one of Australia’s biggest apex predators - specifically, a 5m saltwater crocodile.

Crocosaurus Cove is the only place in Australia that offers you the chance to dive with a croc. Feel the power and strength of these creatures up close and personal and get some awesome pics while you do it.

If the Cage of Death isn't your thing, the Cove still has a bunch of engaging attractions including a reptile show and fishing with crocs.

Darwin Waterfront

The Darwin Waterfront is a popular hot spot for teenagers and young people to swim, relax and soak up the sun.

Recreation Lagoon - The Bali-inspired Beach Club at the Recreation Lagoon is open everyday from June to September. Decked out with day beds and lounges, there’s house music and regular DJs to add to the laid back vibes.

Wave Lagoon - Catch a wave at Darwin’s most popular stinger and croc-free swimming spot - the Wave Lagoon. With 10 different wave patterns and lounges and umbrellas to chill out lagoon-side, you can easily spend a whole afternoon at this Waterfront attraction.

Aqua Park - Check out the Aqua Park if you want a fun obstacle challenge. Slide, bounce and climb your way over this huge floating obstacle course in the middle of the Recreation Lagoon.

Kingpin

Looking for a retreat from the heat? Kingpin Darwin has over 20 bowling lanes, games arcade, laser tag, ping pong tables and more. In short, it’s the ultimate entertainment destination for teens.

Mindil Beach Sunset Market

The Mindil Beach Sunset Market is at the heart of Darwin’s market scene.

Just a short drive or bus ride from Hudson Parap, the markets are host to over 200 different food, arts and crafts stalls. Running from April to October on Thursday and Sunday nights, the markets are a popular spot for local teens to explore.

Check out the locally made jewellery, art and clothing before wandering the food stalls. You’re guaranteed to have a difficult time choosing what to eat - the markets are home to food from all around the globe.

Enjoy an iconic Darwin sunset dinner on the beach and end the night with some much needed dessert - our favourites are the ice cream stall, churros and of course, Darwin's famous Ken’s Crepes.

One of the newest and most popular ways to see Darwin is on an e-scooter or e-bike. Neuron operate around the Darwin CBD, Waterfront and Cullen Bay, and it’s as easy as downloading the Neuron app to get started.

The Skyline Ferris Wheel is Stokes Hill Wharf’s newest resident for the dry season.

Get spectacular 360 degree views of Darwin and surrounds. Grab some lunch at the wharf or catch Darwin’s stunning sunset in the late afternoon. If you’re out and about after dinner, experience the night lights and see the wheel all lit up.
